Last Sunday, September 22, 2024, Egypt witnessed the harvest of different water-saving rice varieties at the Zanklon Research Station, part of the Water Management Research Institute of the National Water Research Center.

The experiment was attended by Dr. Hani Sweilam, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, during his visit to the Sharqia Governorate on Sunday, September 22. He emphasized the integration of efforts between the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation to serve farmers and increase water productivity.
He pointed out that scientific research is the engine of development and the best path to achieving progress, stressing the necessity of supporting all researchers in finding scientific solutions to water challenges in Egypt, such as limited water resources, population growth, and climate change.

He added that it has become essential to reach new crop varieties that can withstand high temperatures and salinity while consuming less water, while also overcoming any obstacles faced by researchers at the National Water Research Center and others to enhance their scientific production capabilities.
The minister praised Dr. Said Suleiman, a professor at the Faculty of Agriculture at Zagazig University, for his commitment to conducting outstanding research experiments on salinity- and drought-resistant rice varieties in collaboration with the National Water Research Center, noting that the research results and figures are an ethical responsibility that the participating researchers bear in various experiments.

The Zanklon Station is one of the 12 stations affiliated with the Water Management Research Institute under the National Water Research Center, which operates under the umbrella of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and serves as its research arm.
He stressed the importance of supporting all researchers to find scientific solutions to water challenges in Egypt and continuing research experiments for salinity- and drought-resistant rice varieties in collaboration with the National Water Research Center.

He reaffirmed the integration of the efforts of the Ministries of Irrigation and Agriculture to serve farmers and increase water productivity, explaining that the research results and figures are an ethical responsibility borne by the participating researchers in various experiments.
He stated that there is no alternative to reaching new crop varieties that can withstand high temperatures and salinity while consuming less water, and that the government is working to eliminate any obstacles faced by researchers at the National Water Research Center and others to enhance their scientific production capabilities.
