On Last Thursday, Serbia signed a €2.7 billion ($2.99 billion) deal with France to purchase 12 new Rafale fighter jets, marking the first time the Eastern European country has bought Western aircraft. This is the first time a country from the former Soviet bloc in Eastern Europe has purchased Western fighter jets.

On August 29, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and French President Emmanuel Macron attended the Palace of Serbia for a ceremony to exchange the signed bilateral documents.
Serbian Defense Minister Bratislav Gašić exchanged the signed contract for purchasing Rafale aircraft and accompanying goods and services with Dassault Aviation CEO Eric Trappier.


Serbia buys French Rafale fighters

The total value of the contract to purchase 12 brand new aircraft and all accompanying equipment is €2.7 billion ($2.99 billion). Earlier yesterday, Minister Gašić signed the aforementioned Rafale purchase agreement with Dassault Aviation CEO Trappier.

The contract signing was attended by Assistant Minister of Material Resources Dr Nenad Miloradović, Air Force and Air Defense Commander General Duško Žarković, and representatives from Dassault Aviation.

A statement issued by the Serbian Ministry of Defense mentioned that the purchase of Rafale aircraft for the Serbian Air Force and Air Defense will ensure the long-term protection of the Republic of Serbia’s airspace and contribute to the overall safety of our country and its citizens.
